Decorating 101, Issue #002 --,How to cure decorating blues on a budget? February 08, 2007 |
| Hi There, Are you tired of the same old same old? Do you walk into a particular room of your house and just feel blah? Sometimes all you need is a good old fashioned furniture rearranging. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how effective it is in transforming your outlook on life? Remember how exciting it was to move into your first home or apartment? The experience was full of new sounds and smells and the feeling of a fresh start. You can bring back some of that mystery by simply moving your furniture around and switching furniture from room to room. This makes a great spring cleaning project because chances are you’ll likely find Cheerios under the couch and a few more surprises under and in between pieces as you move them. The easiest way to do this, I’ve found, is to map out your room on a piece of graph paper. Be sure to measure windows and doorways and draw them onto the graph paper accordingly. Then measure each piece of furniture and draw it in proportion on another sheet of graph paper. Color and label the pieces and cut them out. Now you can easily arrange the pieces over and over again on the page that shows your room dimentions. Remember to allow 18 inches to comfortably maneuver between pieces. Print out graph paper here . Use a heavy card stock because it holds up better than plain copy paper. This may seem like a lot of extra work, but you’ll thank yourself for it later. Believe me! A back can only take so much arranging, moving and rearranging in one day. It’s better to only do it once. Your floors will thank you too! Maybe it’s just me and my depth perception or something, but I can’t seem to get the right idea of how much space a piece takes up unless I draw it out. Below is an “example room”. I like to color the furniture pieces with brightly colored marker. It helps to define the area a little bit better. On this layout one inch is equal to one foot. You can change it to fit your needs.
