Decorating 101, Issue #006 --,How to Decorate With White June 09, 2007 |
| Hi There, White, if used properly in a home decorating palette, can create a peaceful and serene backdrop for your colorful family to enjoy. However, it’s not quite as simple as grabbing a couple gallons of white from the shelf at the home improvement store. It takes a bit more planning. Here’s how to get started if you like that clean fresh white look. First you’ll need to start with a whites palette of colors. If you’ve never seen one before, ask at the paint store. You’ll be amazed at how many shades of white there are! Choose a color for the walls. This is a fairly easy decision. A white with a slight beige tint is a good start. Next you will need to choose pieces of furniture that are a slightly different shade of white. Take your whites paint chips with you when you shop. If you want to use the furniture that you already have, paint it another shade of white. Slip covers are an easy way to “paint” furniture white. A simple quilted slip cover fits the bill. Keep ceiling light fixtures wall switch plates and lamps all shades of white. Trim around doors and windows should also be painted white. Window treatments should be cream or white and sheer. Let lots of light in. Light has a magical way of bouncing around a light colored room and creating warmth. This look is particularly nice with wood flooring. Light colors push the walls away and make the room feel larger and the wood creates a welcoming warmth. You’re getting the idea now, right? The idea is to make everything in the room a shade of white. When you use the different shades of whites like creams, very faint blues, greens or pinks, it gives depth to the room while keeping the surroundings pure. We’re not finished yet! Without this last step you’ll end up with a boring and maybe even icy space! Here’s what you need to do. Choose one bold color. A turquoise blue-green is a nice choice. Find several accessories that incorporate this color such as a large wall painting or a grouping of vases or dishes. This is the place to splurge. You won’t feel so guilty because you’ll need only and handful of accessories. Less is more. The bold color will pop against the white backdrop. Your eyes will be immediately drawn to these items so make sure they’re worth it! Always remember that a white color scheme should be planned deliberately. Don’t use it as a crutch just because you’re afraid of color! The following is a great book that will help you plan the use of whites on purpose.
