Decorating 101, Issue #0013 --Create Faux Walls for Your Small Space February 14, 2008 |
Hi There,Make Small Rooms Super Chic!Have a small room and need to divide it into multiple spaces? Here are a couple ways you can do this. These ideas are especially good if you live in an apartment.1. Hang a curtain rod from the ceiling that will divide the 2 spaces, say the living room and computer work space. String up as many sheer panels as you need to have a continuous flow of fabric. It is best to use sheer so that light can filter through, but still gives the feeling of privacy. You will need to measure ahead of time so you’ll have enough to puddle slightly at the floor. You can get by with shorter panels if you use a couch back to help break up the space. In this case the curtains need to barely touch the top of the sofa. Next all you have to do is arrange the furniture as if there are really two separate rooms. I know it’s a little scary at first, but it looks beautiful when it’s finished and you’ll wonder why you never thought of it before! 2. Another idea is to let a piece of art do the work for you. Grab the measurement from the ceiling to the floor and run to the hardware store. You’ll need a sturdy hook that will screw into the ceiling and a piece of one inch conduit the length of your measurement. Grab a handful of picture hangers with hooks while you’re at it. Drill a hole in the conduit about ½ inch from one end. Install the hook into the ceiling where you want to divide the room and hang the conduit onto the hook through the hole you just drilled. Hold your painting up and place a mark on the conduit once you’ve found the right height. Take the conduit down and drill a hole at your mark. Use a pair of pliers to bend the picture hanger in a way that it will hook on the hole as well as act as a hook for the painting. Wow! That was it! Now you have the chic faux wall look you see in many home decorating magazines! If you need a longer faux wall you’ll need to repeat this process. Also, to make the conduit disappear into the background, spray paint it black. Small spaces don’t have to mean boring style. It’s all about making the space work for you. In fact, smaller rooms mean less to clean, and I’m all for that! |
