The Hows and Whys of the Advent Christmas Wreath
The Advent Christmas wreath has a rich history. Here it is in short. Many years ago in Eastern Europe, particularly Germany, people made wreaths of evergreen and lighted
fires to resemble the hope we have through the coming of our Lord Jesus to this darkened world. "Advent" is a Latin word meaning "the coming."
This truly is a wreath idea for Christmas that holds a special meaning in my heart.
Traditionally the Advent Christmas Wreath is made up of four candles surrounded by a circle of evergreen.
Usually three are purple and the last is pink. Although, the colors are really a matter of tradition, the
candles can really be any color you choose. The most important thing is the meaning behind the tradition.
Each candle represents a countdown to Christmas. On the fourth Sunday before Christmas the first candle
is lit, the next Sunday the second is lit and so on until all the candles are burning on Christmas.
It's very simple to make your own Advent Christmas Wreath. Evergreen clippings from outside are the best
because they're the most fragrant, but sometimes that just isn't possible. So, store bought will do just
fine. Form them into a circle using floral wire to attach the ends. You may even wish to buy an evergreen
circle at your local hobby store that is already made. Purchase four candles, I prefer that they be 1.5 to 2 inches
in diameter. You can burn them longer with less mess. You will also want to purchase four glass rounds or one
large one to put under the candles to catch the drips. If you'd like to embellish a bit, tie tiny colored bulbs
to the evergreen branches. A blue Christmas decoration here and there really looks elegant with white candles in the middle.
You can also use a variation of the Advent Christmas Wreath by placing the four candles in a straight line and scattering
greenery around them. This makes a great Christmas table decorating idea and is especially pleasing to the eye for long tables.
Now you're all set! You have a beautiful Advent Christmas Wreath! Rejoice in God's greatest
gift as you light each candle!
