Read on for ways to bring a little Asian design into your home.

1. Make elegant wall hangings to use when Asian interior decorating. Buy a collection of 4 plain black picture frames. Take water color paper and slightly crinkle. Then flatten and cut to picture frame size. Brush
Chinese Symbols
on each paper with water color paints. Use symbols that have special meaning to you like “family” or “love.”2. Use pieces of rosewood furniture that are heavily lacquered. You can create this look yourself by purchasing an unfinished piece of furniture and staining it a dark reddish brown. Then put at least 4 coats of polyurethane on, sanding lightly between each one. If you want to get want to get fancy, you can use craft paints to delicately brush on a few decorative strokes like intricate flowers and greenery before you lacquer.
3. Use fabrics for curtains that are gently flowing like silk for a formal room and a simple bamboo shade for a more contemporary Asian interior decorating look.
4. Lanterns are a great way to add Asian interior decorating or Asian design to a room. You can use units that are free standing or hang strings of small lantern balls from one end of the room to the other.
5. Use a large decorative Asian fan for a home interior accessory to use as a focal point on an empty wall.
6. Create a reading nook with a simple chair and table and an Asian umbrella with a stand like the one you see below. You can even add a ©"Cascading Bamboo" Sculptural Fountain
to add to the mood.
7. Add an Asian style Shoji Screen with Shelving
to divide a small room into intimate spaces when Asian interior decorating. You can also try your hand at making one yourself by reading How To Design, Build, And Install Japanese Screens (Paperback)
. I like the kind that have opaque rice paper attached to wooden panels. They are especially nice for small spaces because the light is allowed to come through.
8. Don’t forget to add the all important Asian rug with it’s beautifully intricately woven designs. It will really pull the room together. For a more natural look, cover the floors with traditional Asian flooring called tatami mats made of natural fibers.
9. Display home interior accessories like sculptures made of jade or granite throughout the room. Jade bookends work nicely if you don’t want to clutter with knic knacs.
10. You can use Asian vases as bookends when Asian interior decorating. Just mix a portion of a bag of cement according to package directions and fill the vases. Let dry and voila! Book ends.
11. Keep furniture sparse and low profile. Keep large pillows around for comfortable floor seating. Who says you even have to have a couch?
12. Make an origami mobile. Check out an origami book at the library. Fold birds of different shapes and sizes. Find two sticks about the same size and criss cross to make the mobile top. Tie with a natural colored string. Punch small holes in the birds and hang with fishing line or clear thread from the criss crossed sticks. Hang the mobile in an empty corner of the room from the ceiling using an eye hook.
Feng Shui
Feng Shui is often associated with Asian interior decorating, but it can really apply to any decorating style. It is to be in harmony with nature. When incorporating feng shui into your decorating style, pay attention to where furniture is placed as not to disturb the natural flow of things. By this I mean don’t put your answering machine on a table where you see it right when you get in the evening. Another no no….. Don’t put your exercise bike in your bedroom which is supposed to be a restful place. It will make you think of what needs to be done and relaxing won’t be on the list! I don’t advise getting into the religious aspect of it, but I do think that certain things we do when decorating are completely against the natural flow of life.
By now you know if
Asian interior decorating
is for you. It’s a terrific balance between elegant and modern if you can't decide!
