Starting a business decorating the interior of homes can be challenging, yet very rewarding. Here are some questions you need to ask yourself before ordering business cards. 1. Do I want to work from home, be out in the field or both? Working from home has obvious benefits like being able to care for your children, taking care of household business and the all important favorite, working in your jammies! 2. If I start a business decorating the interior of homes and I work from home, where will my office be? What kind of equipment will I need? What kind of time will I have to have undisturbed to be successful? 3. How will I promote my decorating business? Will I have a
website
? Will I advertise in newspapers? Will I just try to survive on word of mouth? Personally, I’ve found website advertising to be the most beneficial. And believe me, I’ve tried everything from cash register receipt advertising to direct mailings to newspapers! 4. Do I have the proper education to start a business decorating the interior of homes? By education I don’t necessarily mean “formal” education. You can have “know how” and be just as successful or more so. A business class here or there does help, though. Passion about what you do is important, but it isn’t the complete picture of success. How will you handle employees, tax returns or track profit and loss? When I was starting my first business, a teacher, recommended that I read The EMyth by Michael E. Gerber. I have not put it down since! When starting a business decorating the interior of homes, it is vital that you have the proper mind set in addition to superior skills. I guess what I’m trying to say is that just because you are good at decorating doesn’t automatically make you a good business person. 5. How will I organize my business? Will I be a sole proprietor, a corporation or an LLC? 6. What is the income potential when starting a business decorating the interior of homes? What are my goals? Is it realistic to expect this business to meet those goals? The number one most important thing you must do if you decide to take the plunge is go for it! Don’t do it half heartedly or it will never get off the ground. Once you’ve decided to make it happen, plan, plan, plan, plan and plan! Write down every detail of what you foresee your business to be. See it in your minds eye before it even exists. Create it on paper, from the color of your office walls to the number of employees you plan to have and when they will be hired. You simply cannot go overboard when planning! We decorators do like to plan you know! When you are planning, make sure to plan for the customer and not according to what you like. Before you make each decision, always ask yourself, “How would my customer react to this?” Once you have this information all out on paper, follow it! Of course there are always surprises that you will have to adjust for. Not a big deal. One more bit of advice. You’ll thank me for this later, I promise. Make yourself easily duplicatable. Don’t mould your business around you. It’s easy to get caught up in the wonderful euphoria that you are the ruler of your kingdom and that the customers cannot survive without your personal advice and expertise. Stay consistent in your business practices so that customers know what to expect and so an employee at any time can step in to take your place while you’re on a much needed hiatus to Jamaica! You may never want to quit doing what you love and you don’t have to. Just remember the truly successful person’s business doesn’t stop making money when he or she quits working. Hopefully these questions will get you to thinking deeply if a
business decorating the interior
of homes is something you want to pursue. I really hope it is! Although the statistics of small business failure always lurk in the shadows, you can make your mind up to be a success!
