Country Cottage Decorating

Is it for You?

Custom Search

Country cottage decorating is cozy and has a timeless appeal. It’s one of the easiest styles to achieve due to the need for mixing and matching. If you have odds and ends of furniture and accessories the way I do this decorating style will be a match made in heaven for you! Here are some ideas to tie all of your belongings together to make your home and rooms have the country cottage decorating feel on purpose rather than a hodge podge of miscellaneous home décor accessory that you just don’t know what to do with.

1. Bring nature in. Anywhere you can place a bowl of rosebuds or a jar of wild flowers is super! Country cottages are usually nestled in a sanctuary of trees, vines and blossoms. It’s only right that the inside of the cottage be treated the same way. Even if flowers are out of season, use silk reproductions. Potted plants are a good idea too. Paint an inexpensive terra cotta pot with a crackle faux paint finish . Then place the plant and original pot inside of the terra cotta pot. This is much easier than repotting and will spare you from the added hassle of cleaning up after a sweating terra cotta pot.

2. Wreaths are popular all year round in country cottage decorating. Square wreaths are particularly popular right now. It’s quite easy to make one. Loop a two inch ribbon around the top of the wreath. Bring the two ends together at the top to tie a bow. Then hang on a decorative hook or swag finial. Give the look extra zing by hanging it in front of a mirror slightly larger than the wreath.

3. Use delicate floral patterns for throw pillow, rugs and linens. Natural fibers are a must! Cottons are just right. They wrinkle too, which is gives a nice lived in look when country cottage decorating.

4. Pine is an excellent choice when choosing country living room furniture. The best part is it’s less expensive than many woods. It’s soft and dents easily which is good because it can easily become rustic so you get a primitive country decorating look.

5. Use woven baskets to hold everything from linens on the shelf to books by the bed. There are so many shapes and sizes you can’t help but find them desirable. The linings that some baskets come with are more appealing yet. With linings to match your décor, you don’t have to feel sloppy about leaving baskets in plain view on a bathroom shelf or even in the kitchen. Baskets are such a terrific way to organize things!

6. Consider antique appliances like a chambers stove. If you decide to purchase a restored model, it will be a bit costly. On the other hand, you can restore it yourself, but it will require many hours of intense labor. Decide for yourself. Either way, antique appliances add a touch of cottage nostalgia that nothing else can quite replicate.

7. Painted paneling offers a great cover up for offensive bathroom tiles or outdated wallpaper. This is an easy fix for a bathroom. If you choose paneling paint it a pastel color or white. You can also use a lime faux paint finish for an old worn look. Install the paneling two feet below the ceiling and piece all the way to the floor. Finish with a decorative piece of molding around the top.

8. One of my favorite interior design colors for country cottage decorating is different shades of whites and creams. It’s very easy to do and it works out so naturally.

No matter how hard you try you won’t be able to memorize an exact white hue. This really works to your advantage. When you’re out shopping you can pick up a shade of white curtain, pillow, linens or accessories and they will flawlessly work together in the room. When striving for this look pay special attention to textures. Lace crochet and silk in shades of white are good examples. Textures will all work nicely together as long as all are in shades of white.

9. An easy window treatment is to hang a swag of vines and flowers over finials at each corner. This ideas is best used where you don't need privacy.

When country cottage decorating , the main thing to remember is it's okay to bring a variety of items into the room. It doesn't all have to match. It's much better if it doesn't. You are creating a beautiful room full of character!
