Craftsman home style describes the American home interior and exterior from the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. You’ve probably heard it referred to as “The Arts and Crafts Era” It combines art deco and art nouveau, but still makes heavy use of the crafts of the time like woodworking, iron and leather. Below are some classic characteristics of this decorating style. Feel free to sit back and take note!

1. Stain woodwork dark colors

2. Incorporate stained glass pieces into the décor. Tiffany lamps add a kind of art deco look which was popular during the period. If you're extra crafty, you can create your own custom stained glass panel and hang it in a bathroom by eyehooks. This way you can take it with you if you move.

3. Use furniture that has straight lines and looks blocky. Mission Style furniture is definitely a must to get “the look.”

4. Craftsman home style colors tend to be muted and aged. Let a swatch of old fabric or wallpaper inspire your choice for a paint color combination. Like this swatch from Morris & Company. They began to sell their wallpapers in Boston in 1873, and by the mid 1870s had a growing line of wallpaper, fabric and carpet in many major American cities.

5. Craftsman Bungalows were made popular by Craftsman magazine, published by Gustav Stickley from 1901-1916.

•Painted or stained brown or dark green (to blend with nature)

•A sleeping porch

•The front door opens directly into the living room

•Dark wood paneling

•plastered ceiling

•A fireplace

•Arched opening flanked with bookcases separates living room/dining room

•Bedrooms with woodwork painted a light color.

•Generous porch

•Small kitchen

If your house has any of these characteristics, you’re already well on your way to the craftsman home style.

6. Display a craftsman style mantle clock over the fireplace. The friendly tick tick tick will contribute to the sense of home. Add a few other items, careful, not too cluttered now, like wrought iron candle stick holders and several antique books. The more tattered, the better!

7. Built-ins were popular during the arts and crafts movement. Do you have a narrow room? Do you lack storage space? Add built-in shelving along each wall. They can be a little pricey if you aren’t blessed with the ability to swing a hammer. But, think of them as an investment since they will add to the value of your home.

The key to craftsman home style decorating is to make it look as if it has always been there. I think it is one of the most endearing styles of all time!
