Decorating With Antique Linens

by Scarlett
(Houston, Texas)

Vintage linens are something that most people toss to the side whenever they get new linens. The older vintage linens have more thread count and can hold up in all different types of conditions. You can find these antique linens in yard sales, flea markets, thrift shops, auctions, or in your own family’s home. When you first get married, you may have received some hand-me-downs from friends and family. Over the years, you may have put them away to make room for the newer ones. So if you can dig those antique sheets out, here are some ways to use them to decorate with.

Curtains

When you feel like creating a project, grab an old antique linen and make a pair of curtains. Only use the linens if they are torn and cannot be used for their original purpose. Making curtains is one of the easiest project to do and you do not need a sewing machine to do it. If you don’t have a sewing machine consider using fabric glue to make your rod pocket. Cut enough off to make two tiebacks and your curtains are complete. Remember to measure twice, cut once for accuracy.

If you like to quilt, use the antique linens are part of your quilt or if the entire piece is in tack, use it for the backing of your quilt. It will be extremely soft and comfortable and will outlast the quilt if it is well taken care of. Quilting with this material is far better than using the material offered today. It was better quality and made to last.

Table covers

If you want to make some table runners or table covers then the antique linens can help you create the right look for you. It is easy to create enough covers for all of your living room tables using one twin or queen size antique linen. You can measure the sizes you need and cut them out to fit. Seam up the edges and if possible place batting and another layer on the back to create a quilt like look and feel.

In the bedroom, you can make covers for your dressers and nightstand. These linens are light and airy and can be very soft feeling because they have been used so many times.

You can find these antique linens with different designs and shapes on them. Create a specific look with a bird or flowers on the sheet. You can coordinate the rest of the look with the design on your antique linens.

Incorporate that look into your area rugs for the room. You can choose from so many different looks including contemporary area rugs that will give your room an individual unique look.

Throw Pillows

If you have any material left from your linen, consider making some throw pillows of different sizes. This will use up the rest of your linen and you will not be wasting any. Throw pillows can be placed anywhere in your home; on the bed, on the sofa, on the chair, a bench, or in your child’s room.

What was once necessary supplies for every day living can still provide design and decor to your home.
