Top Ten Tips

With a little extra thought, themes and ideas for decorating baby rooms can last well into the elementary years. Here are some ideas to get you started.

<<>>
1. Although pink, blue and yellow pastels are nice colors, they often don’t fit the likes of a toddler or young child. They’re just not exciting enough. Studies have actually shown that patterns and colors stimulate the young developing mind.

2. Add a special piece of furniture that you’ve personalized in some way, whether with paint or that you’ve taken extra time to shop for. My husband refinished a rocking chair for me when I was expecting our first child. Now that my daughter is 6 years old I can tell her the story about how we hunted for just the right chair to rock her in and how Daddy spent hours in the garage working on it because he was thinking of her. Decorating baby rooms is more than just about outward appearances. Its about making memories.

3. Use potted plants to add a jungle-like feel. Of course you’ll want to do some research on which kinds are safe and non poisonous. Attach a shelving unit out of reach along the wall to display the greenery. As an added bonus, plants oxygenate the air. What better air purifier could you get for your little one?

4. Babies love to study faces. When decorating baby rooms, frame large colored photographs of family and friends in acrylic framesand hang them in the nursery at eye level. Acrylic frames are safer than glass and they aren't harmed by a little drool. You can use strips of velcrow to fasten the photos to the walls or glue a magnetic strip to the back of each frame. You can purchase a fantastic invention called magnetic paint. It comes in several different colors and requires around 4 layers. It's soo nifty! You can designate one wall in baby's room or a small section at eye level just for magnets. As your child grows this will become a great place to display artwork too!

5. As baby grows older, hang a drapery rod a couple of feet down from the ceiling. Hang a roll of art paper on the rod. Pull down to create wonderful works of art.

6. When decorating baby rooms, use special outgrown clothes to decorate a wall space. Buy four hooks and attach to the wall in a group of 2 by 2. Hang Christening gowns or baby dedication outfits from the hooks. After all, you want to keep them but they usually get boxed up and thrown into the attic.

7. Personalize baby’s linenswith name and birthday using non-toxic fabric paints on prewashed 100% cotton fabric. You can use brushes or fabric paint pens to stencil or draw designs too.

8. Another good and safer alternative to frilly blankets and crib pads when decorating baby rooms is to hang a curtain rod on the empty wall shared by baby’s bed. Hang a decorative valance on the rod over the bed. This makes a great focal point for the room without having to be concerned with safety issues. Of course, it's very hard to resist the soft dreamy feel of baby linens like the ones below.

9. When decorating baby rooms, there’s really no need for a closet. Have you ever tried to hang up all those tiny clothes? It doesn’t work too well. Take the sliding doors off the closet and decorate the inside to make a little nook for a changing table, shelving or a chest of drawers. You can always put the doors back on later. If you paint the inside of the closet to look like clouds ,and paint the room a different color, it gives the feeling of looking out a large picture window into a bright blue sky. For a more princess-like theme, hang 2 large eye hooks from each of the two ends of the closet. Purchase one long piece of sheer fabric, 10 yards or more, drape through the hooks and let cascade to the floor.

10. When shopping for furniture to use in decorating baby rooms, choose items that will do double duty like a crib that will turn into a toddler bed. Or ask to purchase floor models. A changing table can be created out of a vanity or small chest of drawers, really anything that is waist high. Just top with a foam pad and cloth cover. Saving on furniture will free up your budget for even more important things like college!

I can see the wheels turning. Your eyes are opening. You’re thinking, wow! decorating baby rooms doesn’t have to fit the mold. Now, you’ve got it!
