Mmmmm let’s see. Decorating for the home party is easy but it does take some planning. It's simple to decorate for a child’s party. Pinatas and cake do the trick. Parties for teenagers are a little more difficult to plan but offer the predictable pizza and trendy music. But when it comes to parties for adults, where do you begin? You’re bounced around from activity to activity every day and barely have time to sit down to take a breather, let alone plan a party. And you have so little time to party as it is that you want to make the most of it when you do get together with friends. So, where do you begin? Well, first of all, I’m ashamed to say that I’ve frequently been invited to home décor parties and cooking parties and lingerie parties and jewelry parties and I just don’t go. If that trips your trigger, great! But that just doesn’t work for me. Below are some ideas you can use to plan a successful, hassle free party. Also included are ways to start decorating for the home party.

1. Get rid of the idea that a party has to be in honor of someone or something. Get together with a group of friends and family just for fun.

2. Host a mystery party . You can purchase one or make it up yourself. As the host you will decide which guest plays which roll. Guests are asked to over dress and really play it up! You will need to try decorating for the home party a few days ahead of time. The more you decorate, the more realistic it is. Clues are divided among the guests and you try to figure out who did it. You may feel silly at first. The more you put into it the more fun you have! Everyone needs an opportunity once in a while to step outside themselves and dress up!

3. Host a dinner party where no one is allowed to eat with utensils or hands. They must use only their faces! You may decide to tell the guests ahead of time or not! Try decorating for the home party by setting the table picnic style. Use a checkered white and red table cloth. Play square dance music in the back ground. Ask the guests to come in their overalls. Place a bib at each place setting with each guests name on it. Be sure to serve spaghetti!

4. Host a dessert party out on the lawn at dusk. Decorate for a home party by setting up folding tables and chairs. Drape patio string lightsfrom the house to a single pole in the yard to create starlight effect. Play soft swing music in the back ground. Place jar candles around the yard or patio. Ask everyone to bring a dessert that is magical and be prepared to tell why.

5. Set a date to get together to play board games. Ask each person or couple to bring their favorite. Although it may seem silly to send out invitations for an idea as simple as this, it helps people to remember the date and time.

6. Have a tye dye party. All you will need is a package of rubber bands, six 5 gallon buckets, six fabric dye colors. Ask the guests to bring there own items to dye. This is a great outdoor activity. When decorating for the home party, use a 1960’s theme. Ask guest to come in bell bottoms and bandannas. These are easily borrowed or found at thrift stores. Play 1960’s music. Encourage everyone to slur their words and say phrases like “groovy” or “hey maan.”

7. Throw a beach party. It works best if you have a pool or some sort of body of water to work with. Ask guest to dress as if going to the beach. When decorating for the home party use blow up palm trees.

8. Host a party where each person has to act like a movie character for the evening until the proper character is guessed. Give prizes like free video rentals or movie passes for the best “actor” or “actress.” Watch movies and eat popcorn. For a little extra drama, roll out a red carpet from your front door for your guests to walk on.

9. Have a Hawaiian luau. Provide leis for all the guests. Get the grill fired up outside. Ask guests to bring anything to eat that can be skewered. Start decoratingfor the home party by adding raffia table skirts to tables. Purchase plastic margarita glasses and serve strawberry banana smoothies. (Ice, strawberries, bananas, splash of milk, a little sugar) A pineapple with a paper umbrella works well for a centerpiece. Play an ocean soundtrack CD, the Beach Boys or traditional luau music. Be sure to have a limbo contest!

10. Create a treasure hunt theme. No need to start decorating for the home party. Imagination is all that's required for this one! Start at your home for the first clue. Hide other clues all around town for the hunt. Make the treasure something inexpensive and consumable like candy, nuts or chocolate. Be sure to hide the treasure well so non party players don’t get to it first!

11. You can alter the treasure hunt idea like this. Instead of going out together as a group, go in several small groups. Make up a sheet with questions such as, bring back a pine cone, Find 2 people named Bob and have them sign your paper, bring back someone’s business card, bring back a Wal-Mart sticker. You get the idea. The first group to get back to the starting point with all the tasks completed wins.

Remember, above all, that the purpose of getting together whether you decide to start decorating for the home party or not, is to create an atmosphere where everyone can enjoy each other’s company and have fun!
