Decorative interior painting may be the single most dramatic improvement you can make to your living area. It can also be the most nerve racking. Follow the ideas below to make you look like a pro the first time around. Creating a space you love will give you a sense of accomplishment as well as admiration from friends and family. It feels great! The first key to your success is to choose a
paint color combination
This is the most essential part of decorative interior painting. It is the foundation of your whole design. It really isn't that difficult. If you can dress yourself, you can choose spectacular color schemes and patterns for your walls. After your color palette is firm in your hand, you'll want to check out
faux finishing
options. Faux finishing is a terrific way to add depth and character to your room or furniture.
If you are feeling particularly brave, try your hand at painting a decorative interior.
"But they take hours to complete and I'm no artist!" you say. Not so! I'ts as easy as coloring a coloring book. If you have an empty space on your wall that bugs you every time you walk by and it's been bare for at least 6 months, this may be your answer!
Another idea that will add some pizazz to your space is stenciling.
Stencils
are nice especially if you have limited time and like to see results fast. This is also a good way to get your feet wet when you are new at decorative interior painting. Use the kind of stencil where you apply layers of different colors. It adds depth.
Break out of the mould. Not all stenciling has to be done around the top of a room. Consider stenciling around wall hangings and windows. If you are in a huge hurry, use rubber stamps.
What about wallpaper you ask? My best advice is to go easy. It's crazy hard to get off and the patterns tend to date quickly. However, if you have your heart set on wallpaper, consider using only a decorative border.
Okay. With paint brush in hand, you're ready to go at it, right? Not so fast! You'll want to make sure you have the proper interior painting supplies. You will need one really good trim brush. The are expensive, around $15 or so. It pays for itself, trust me. Don't bother taking the time to tape everything. The trim brush will feather out nicely to give you a clean edge. When painting window trim, it's alright to paint the glass too. A few minutes later you can scrape it off with a flat razor knife. Nothing makes you want to kick yourself more than realizing halfway through the project that you just ran our of rags, or worst of all paint! So, double check yourself. Whew! This takes some serious thinking and planning! Now you're ready to conquer the walls with your polished
decorative interior painting
skills.
