Creating Design and Drama in a Contemporary Space

Design and Drama?

Modern and contemporary design decorations can seem boring and bland, especially in rooms that have little color and are mostly neutral. To add some spice to the room, it becomes necessary to create design and drama in the contemporary space. Here are some handy tips to adding a new level of style and class to a modern space without sacrificing sophistication.

Add one eye-catching piece to the room. This sounds simple, but adding one colorful, eye-catching decoration to an otherwise neutral and modern room can really make the room stand out. Do not confuse eye-catching with garish or off-the-wall, make sure to keep the centerpiece complementary with the rest of the room. For example, if the room is decorated in neutral shades of gray and white, add one bright blue, red, or green wall art piece for some extra flair. Make the piece large enough to stand out without going overboard.

Use color in subtle but noticeable places. Although this tip sounds like an oxymoron, splashing color in subtle places get noticed quickly, adding some design and drama to even the most neutral room. The colors should complement the room and each other, but do not have to match identically unless that is the desired effect. For instance: adding decorative pillows designed with colorful geometric shapes to a sofa or chair adds some drama without being over the top. Complement the pillows with a picture frame or wall art piece, and the room has cohesive impact without giving up the contemporary theme.

Make simple drama count. The hanging on the living room wall does not have to be a hot pink velvet Elvis in order to count as dramatic. Choose accessories and accents that complement the room and the contemporary décor, while contrasting with neutral styles and colors in the room. One example of this idea would be to choose a larger wall art that expresses the individual taste of the homeowner, with some color. It does not have to be an odd picture; simple pictures that are colorful in a tasteful way add design and drama to a contemporary room very adequately.

It does not have to cost a lot of money to be dramatic. People often fall for the pricier pieces believing that they must be more dramatic because they cost more. Simple and inexpensive touches can add drama just as well as expensive ones. Some can be more dramatic and add more life to the room than even wall art that costs thousands of dollars. It is easier to decorate for seasons if less costly pieces are used as well. Sewing decorative pillow covers is simple, and these can be an excellent way to show some personality without spending a lot of money. They can also be changed out frequently to add a different touch to the room.

Choose pieces by the room, instead of “finding a place” for what is found. It can create a much more refined look if things flow instead of appearing to be placed at random. To give a home a very sophisticated atmosphere regardless of the value of the home overall, allow the contemporary theme to flow from one room to the next, and use drama to create living spaces in each area instead. It is not absolutely necessary to choose living room pieces only for living room spaces, but it looks beautiful when things are in harmony with their surroundings. Choose drama based on the rest of the room, not simply based on taste, for maximum results.
