Using decorative painting on counter tops is a great alternative to spending a wad of cash for new! How do you do that? Paint them! “Can you really do that?” you ask. Of course. It’s really simple. Follow the steps below to give your kitchen a face lift in no time at all.1. When preparing to paint a faux finish on counter tops, start with a clean, dry surface, free of clutter.
2. Purchase a product called KILZ or something similar. KILZ comes in gallon cans with a red and white label. It adheres to slick surfaces easily. It creates a surface that paint will stick to without peeling off. Use a soft bristle brush or roller to apply. Follow instructions on can.
3. Paint your counter using interior paint in quart containers. You can decorate the lip or back splash with a stenciled vine or you can free hand your own work of art. You can also use a faux paint finish on counter tops. A marble faux paint finish works well for this.
A. Apply your base coat. This will be your main color. In the case below the base color is white.

B. Mix three containers of glaze, each with a different color of paint. Behr makes an excellent faux glaze. Choose 2 similar colors like raw sienna and raw umber. The third color should be more contrasting like black. You will use the least of the third color so keep that in mind when mixing the paint and glaze.
C. Use a soft, good quality trim brush to brush on a coat of plain faux glaze.
D. Apply a small amount of raw sienna glaze diagonally onto the wet surface using filbert
brush. A filbert brush has a flat head that rounds slightly to a point at the end. Repeat with raw umber glaze. For a warmer feel, use more raw sienna; for a cooler feel, use more raw umber.
E. Dampen a goose feather and squeeze out the excess water. Lightly run the tips of the feather through the black glaze. Brush veins along the diagonal lines. Place a few specks of paint outside the major diagonal lines.
F. Gather a piece of plastic at both ends and roll like a rolling pin lightly in the direction of the marble lines. The plastic will pick up some of the colors and smear them slightly.
G. Use a dry softener brush to blot the surface horizontally and then vertically. A softener brush is round at the top with long natural bushy bristles. Ta! Da! A beautiful new faux finish on counter tops!
4. After faux finish on the counter tops or other decorative painting has dried, coat with 4 coats of polyurethane, allowing to dry in between each coat.
5. Allow 10 days for the polyurethane to cure completely. This doesn’t mean you can’t use the counters until then. Just avoid scraping dishes across or cutting on the surface.
You will be amazed at the results! Your family and friends will never believe that you did it yourself or better yet, that you only spent around $100 for the new
faux finish on counter tops.
