French Interior Design Inpired by Lavender

French interior design gathers inspiration from a lavender field landscape. If you close your eyes and breathe deeply you can almost imagine you’re in Provence!

White, green and purple and terra cotta are the colors used in this kitchen style. The cabinets should be white with a worn rustic look to them. You can order them this way or with a little elbow grease, paint the ones you have then sand lightly for a worn look. Terra cotta pots with basil, thyme, cilantro and oregano look chic in a window sill and double as fresh ingredients for pasta sauce or salsa. This brings the green into the room. The walls can be painted a bluish-purple which will really make the cabinets pop!

For a slightly modern look, frame poster prints of herbs and flowers. For a more traditional wall décor, purchase several water color prints of lavender fields or paint your own. China plates in various floral designs and arranged in a square or circle shape make a lovely focal point for a wall. Vintage French prints are easy to find and often are found with a food theme like beer, wine or coffee. They can be hung in a series on the wall. A chabby chic type chandelier with crystals or beads adds a romantic spark to the dining area. Dried bunches of lavender can be tied with a ribbon and hung across a curtain rod to act as a valance.

Wire baskets with handles make great storage for hand towels or fruits. A classic French interior design is a decorative pot and pan hanger that attaches from the ceiling. Copper pans provide the terra cotta color needed for this color scheme and double for cooking. The French are known for fantastic food preparation so don’t be afraid to store cooking utensils, pitchers and bowls wherever they can serve a practical and aesthetic purpose. Open cabinets can serve this function. Open shelving can be substituted if cabinets aren’t available or are too expensive. Colorful dishes can then be displayed as décor as well as grabbed easily when setting the table.
