Modern Interior Design can be Fun!

Let Your Creative Juices Flow!

Modern interior design is all about unique, funky and streamline.

A modern home interior, if not done properly, can appear cold and uninviting. The key is to incorporate clean lines and bold colors in a way that achieves the “New York loft” look without sacrificing the warm inviting atmosphere.

Are you puzzled? Well, not for long. Here’s how to do achieve that contemporary look.

Modern living rooms contain geometric sculptures and art on the walls. Contemporary art usually is made up of bold colors and geometrical shapes. Although this can mean a variety of art to choose from. You can stick with the circles, squares and triangles or you can branch out into artwork with people. The contemporary art with people usually has parts of the body overexagerated and rather eccentric looking. Below are two examples.

When painting walls in modern interior design use bright and bold colors Such as the examples below. You may want to consider painting each wall a different color or a different shade of one particular color. If you’re less adventurious, paint just one wall a bold color and leave the other walls to a more natural tone like beige. The brightly colored wall will become the focal point of your room so remember to place the furniture and art pieces accordingly. For example, you don’t want to hang a dramatic painting on the wall right next to the boldly painted wall. The painting and the boldly colored wall will try to duke it out. The result will be a room that doesn’t have the proper decorating flow. It will cause the eye to be confused and tired. Instead, hang the painting on the boldly colored wall.

Use bold colored furniture that has clean lines and the upholstery is tight fitting with little or no pattern. In modern interior design, the furniture is arranged asymmetrically. Take extra care to purposely place your contemporary furniture off center or in several groupings throughout your contemporary living room. Don’t be afraid to spray paint an oddball piece of old furniture a funky color like neon green. Then add a blue and yellow striped chair cushion to top it off. Below is an example of one of my favorite pieces for contemporary living room furniture.

Modern interior design flooring is usually very plain in and of itself. Faux finish for a concrete floor is an excellent choice. Carpet should be avoided. However, modern area rugs scattered throughout the contemporary living rooms work nicely. Likewise, the ceiling should be plain as well. If you have ceiling tile consider removing it and spray paint all the pipes and wires in the ceiling black. This gives a great loft appeal. If this idea doesn’t make you want to just shout for joy, try painting the ceiling a bold color. You might want to paint it a dark blue to look like the night sky or maybe a hot pink with lots of stick-on mirrored tile. Your imagination is the limit!

Keep modern window treatments sheer to let in light or use roller blinds to completely darken a room. Make sure they are simple and plain.

A tip on choosing the right contemporary home accessory…………

Keep it simple no matter if it’s a vase or a sculpture. Tall, straight lines are very important. Avoid patterns and choose shiny metal objects over intricately painted ones. Modern interior design is all about making a statement! So, just be you!
