Painting Walls on a Small Budget

Hi,

I am moving from my rental and need to re-paint the walls back to off white in order to have my security deposit refunded. I painted the rooms myself and used medium toned (darker) colors such a s sage green. I have had two professional estimates for 5 rooms and two hallways (1200 sq. ft) < $3000 to $6000!
A friend recommended KILZ as a primer; is there a primer I may use that is as good but not so expensive for coverage?
