Rental Art Deco

I love the idea of an art deco bedroom, but did not have the money for either the furniture or major re-do since I rent. My bedroom also served as additional storage, 2 large shelves were necessary on each side of the dresser, taking up one entire wall. I wanted a relaxing, completely uncluttered space. While this may be more of a "stylized" art deco, it's turned out very well for me! first was to clean everything out of the room and paint the walls and ceiling white, completely. A big decorating boo-boo? Maybe. I'd found a sort-of sleigh bed at the local 2nd had store for $25. It had several differnt sizes of slats, but still retaind that "modern" feeling. Originally it was several different "woodtones" and after sanding, the frame was painted glossy black enamel. One dresser that just didn't match was taken out of the room and a taller dresser purchased for $5 at a yard sale was painted. The gold knobs were replaced with white porcelain knobs. Next came the shelves, since it was absolutely necessary to have the shelving in the room, I added another 1/2 shelf on top of the current shelves, that was there would be enough space for things that would no longer be in the rest of the room. Finally, I ordered 6 yards of 108" white fabric at a cost of $30. 3 yards of the fabric were used as floor to ceiling curtains to cover the shelves. I had a half shell lamp that I painted with black enamel and hung over the dresser, just below a silver metallic wreath. When the lamp is turned on, the metal in the wreath catches it and just sparkles. My tall jewelery armoire was also painted gloss black and set next to the bed. I ordered aqua blue crisp satin ($25) and made a duvet for the current comforter, using part of the white fabric for the backing on the duvet, covered my trunk with black fabric and used accent pieces I already had on hand such as silver baskets and a very large silver footed tray ($5 at a 2nd hand store) for perfume. I made sheer black curtains, from floor to ceiling (over the white blinds). To add additional light to the room, I spray painted a lamp shade silver (yes, it does work!!)and set a white "candlestick" lamp on the trunk. The final piece was framing an Egyptian poster I already had and hanging it over the headboard. That poster picked up all the other colors in the room, plus added just a touch of different colors to the room. The end result, for me, was exactly what I wanted. The only drawback is the current wall to wall carpet is nasty brown/yellow, so I'm saving up/looking for an aqua rug!! Forgot to add the cost of the paint and brush. That was about $25. So the total cost for my room re-decorate was about $110. I've set aside another $50+ for an area rug. For me the Art deco decorating has been more an idea of what I think it would look like rather than what it "should" be. I certainly couldn't afford the pieeces, so this is my happy interpretation. When you decorate, make you room what you want it to be!!
