Rustic Home Decorating Inspired by a Garden

This picture is pure inspiration for rustic home decorating. The various heights, shapes and colors show that a little of everything can be pulled together when used in the right amounts.

In my mind’s eye I picture a white washed table with mismatched chairs. Different shapes, curves and even colors will work for this look. If you’re not quite brave enough for jumbled colors, paint the each chair the same color. Use the crackle technique or a worn look where you sand wear spots over a fresh, but cured coat of paint to reveal the under color.

Rustic home decorating is a great interior design style for a new home owner or the budget conscious. A weave of old and new is appropriate. Patterns need not match although colors should stay continuous. Create table settings from garage sale and thrift shop finds. Concentrate on finding quality pieces rather than matching pieces. For example heavy grade stainless fork with a modern design paired with a silver plated spoon with a floral design is preferable to a matching set of cheap flatware. When you use classy pieces it’s easier to make the mismatched style look whimsical rather than cheap.

This is the time to jump start your imagination. Force your brain to think outside the box. Use accessories for anything other than what they are traditionally used for. An example of this would be using an old boot as a flower pot. Now, this may take some modification of the original object, but you get the idea. An old pitcher makes a nice vase for wild flowers. An old stool makes a great plant stand if you fasten a metal wash tub to it. Place the potted plant inside and it will catch overflow if you happen to over water the plant. A series of antique door knobs could become a handy place to hang coats or hats.

Collections can easily be displayed in rustic home decorating. Find an aged piece of lumber about a half inch thick, give or take a little. Glue bottle caps in a pattern onto the board, the older the caps the better. If you can’t find old caps, use new and spray paint them different colors. Then glue beads or buttons to the centers of each. Now you have instant wall art! The result of rustic home decorating should feel happy and free and fun! It’s a fun way to display your personality. It shows you’re comfortable with not being perfect.
