Spring Decorating Ideas
Spring Decorating Ideas with Flowers If you're like many people, you are probably ready for spring soon after the Christmas holiday season is over. Even if there is still some snow on the ground and the weather is chilly, you can add some cheerful spring touches to your home's decorating scheme. Here are a few quick, easy, and inexpensive ways that you can spruce up your home with flowers, just in time for spring. Early Spring Blooms Nothing says "spring" like beautiful fresh flowers. However, in late winter and early spring, fresh flowers from your own garden can be a little difficult to come by. If you are lucky enough to have some early daffodils in your flower beds, you can pick a few as soon as the first buds appear. Crocuses are usually the one of the earliest flowers to bloom, but they are difficult to pick and display, due to their short height. Instead, scoop up a couple of bulbs with a garden trowel, transferring them carefully to a pot just as the blooms are opening up. Then, you'll be able to enjoy their cheerful fresh spring colors indoors, instead of just looking at them through the window. Flowering Bushes and Tree Branches If you have some fruit trees or flowering bushes in your yard, try tricking a few of the branches into blooming early. Cut a few branches from some of your flowering trees or bushes on a day when the temperature is above the freezing point. Choose branches that have flower buds that are starting to get plump. Bring the branches indoors, then cut them again diagonally just above where you originally cut the branch. Place the branches immediately into a large bucket or tub full of cool water, and let them soak for a few hours. Fill a bucket or large vase with warm water, approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit. To make the branches last longer, you could also add a bit of flower preservative. An effective and inexpensive homemade preservative can be made from a quart of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and a half teaspoon of chlorine bleach. Place your branches in a dimly lit, cool location, ideally around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, such as the basement. Once you notice that the buds are starting to show signs of color, you can bring them into an area with more light, arranging them as desired. The flower buds should bloom beautifully. In order to make your blooms last as long as possible, keep them in a cool location, provide them with plenty of water, and don't expose them to direct sunlight. Fresh-Cut Floral Displays If you don't have any early blooming flower bulbs, bushes or fruit trees in your yard, you can still decorate your home inexpensively with flowers. Many grocery stores sell mixed floral bouquets for reasonable prices. Look for flowers that are fresh, undamaged and colorful. Although roses and more exotic flower varieties can be a bit pricey, you'll be able to find some mixed bouquets that are just as pretty and colorful for far less money. Once arranged in a beautiful vase in your home, they will add a much-needed dash of color to your early spring decorating scheme.
