Deep into Victorian style furniture

When it comes right down to it, they simply do not make Victorian style furniture like they did at the turn of the last century. Plush, deep and textured fabrics with scroll work and hardwoods are not often used today. Fortunately, decorating in this style is not a lost art and can be done with a few touches of luxury.

Fabrics

The term “depth” would be a good word to describe furniture from this era. Feeling like you could almost disappear into the rich texture of the valure, velvet or sateen makes the Victorian style a luxurious choice. The color and fabric choice, however, should be considered in tandem with the wood type chosen for the furniture piece.

Furniture frame

Fabrics can vary but the furniture frames should not. They may have different wood styling, like scrolls or feet, but they should all be very sturdy in form and function. Generally, wood is fairly hard in nature and should last several lifetimes. The “guts” of the furniture can be of any construction but it should be constructed to last.

Design

There are many ways to design with Victorian style furniture. The overriding theme should be one where the user can disappear into another world. A world surrounded by luxurious items meant to pamper in a formal way. The lighting of the room is just as critical as the furniture. Light and airy could be used although it is generally bypassed in favor of a more diffused light source such as with shading drapes.

Practical Victorian style furniture is the quintessential form of luxurious practicality. Comfort of the furniture is paramount but not at the expense of proper posture and form. There are several pieces such as the letter table and accompanying chairs where the pieces are purely practical for the period. The areas where comfort is paramount, such as the bedroom, take the concept in exactly the opposite direction. In either instance, the furniture remains the same- sturdy and deep.
